I had never heard of this holiday before but came across it in my research of possible blog topics. I thought the premise fit in rather well with the Random Acts of Kindness Day, Week, and Month celebrations of February. (see post here) So today is all about what you can do to make someone else happy (rather like an act of kindness). Last month, Presley’s school challenged its students to perform just one act of kindness per week and Presley accomplished this “feat” mainly by helping fellow students with their schoolwork. Today is all about what you can do to make another person feel special. To succeed in this endeavor, we should put another person’s needs above our own. It can be as small as paying a person a sincere compliment or as large as you want it to be.
Researching National I Want You to be Happy Day made me think of the song “Happiness”, best remembered from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” (you can watch the video here). My favorite line of that song is:
“Happiness is two kinds of ice cream.”
What could be better than that? I also appreciate the lines:
“Happiness is having a sister…
Singing together when the day is through.”
It makes me think of my girls and how much fun they have together when they think no one is looking (when they have an “audience” they seem to enjoy fighting more than singing).
Or maybe you can find inspiration in Jimmy Durante’s “Make Someone Happy” (click here for the video). I just re-watched (for the hundredth time) Sleepless in Seattle the other night. Remember this song from the Empire State building scene? As Durante succinctly puts it,
“It’s so important to make someone happy,
Make just one someone happy,
And you will be happy too.”
Now I have this yearning to watch an Affair to Remember. I wonder why?
Perhaps Bobby McFerrin said it best in his song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” His lyrics about how a smile can improve everyone’s day just go to prove my point.
“But don’t worry, be happy.
‘Cause when you’re worried, your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down.
So don’t worry, be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy now.”
Pharrell Williams can also be sought out for motivation. His song “Happy” provides this helpful chorus:
“Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
(Because I’m happy)
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
(Because I’m happy)
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do”
So let’s make someone happy today, let them know they’re appreciated, show respect, be polite, and say thank you. It shouldn’t be too difficult and your reward will be their smiles. Who was it that said, “A smile is it’s own reward”? Anyway, they were right and by making others happy we can make ourselves happy in the process. Look at it as a “pay it forward” sort of thing. After all, don’t they say, “A smile is contagious”?
